Taylor Swift, haters and the Super Bowl.

I don’t consider myself a Swiftie. I like Taylor well enough. I know the words to a few of her songs. Truth be told, I would rather listen to Train while driving in my car. I may not agree with her political views. Seeing her get booed, however, when the jumbotron flashed to her at the Super Bowl has me a little perplexed.

What did she ever do to deserve such disrespect?

“I am so sick of seeing her pictures 24/7!”

How is that her fault? Blame the media. I’m pretty sure she would love to go for a walk or enjoy a quiet meal at a bistro without a camera in her face (and a bodyguard nearby) the minute she walks out of a door. Any door. Every town. She handles it with such grace. Waving and smiling at those who greet her. Have you ever seen her curse at an obnoxious reporter? Try to knock a camera out of a photographer’s hands? Be rude to a young fan? No, you haven’t. And you never will.

“If it weren’t for Travis Kelce she wouldn’t even be at the Super Bowl.”

True. And if it weren’t for my granddaughters, I would never go to a middle school volleyball tournament or an elementary school soccer match. Same thing, different level. People support who they love. It’s a beautiful thing! Seeing Taylor at the games and Travis at her concerts sends a positive message to all of those who are watching, young and old. The fact that she includes her parents speaks volumes, as well. Making time to be present for those you love sends an unspoken message, and creates a lasting memory, not soon forgotten.

“If it weren’t for her rich parents, she would not be where she is today.”

That is an assumption, not a fact. Have you ever paid for your daughter to take piano lessons? Have you ever forked out a thousand dollars so your son could be on a traveling baseball team? That’s how it starts. You would be surprised where a strong work ethic, dedication and talent will take you. Taylor has all three. And you don’t always need money to get there. (hence Dolly Parton and J.K. Rowling) Taylor Swift is most definitely one of the hardest working women on the planet. She’s not just a singer/performer/writer. She is a businesswoman. She is a brand. She is a role model for children of all walks of life.

“Charging thousands of dollars for a ticket to her concert is ridiculous!”

The same could be said about tickets to the Super Bowl, or any NFL game for that matter. It’s a business. It employees thousands of people who do not work for free, beginning with the ticket-selling sites and resellers, and trickles down to the venue employees selling popcorn. Let’s not forget the millions of dollars that pour into the cities where her concerts are held via hotels, restaurants, etc. She also makes charitable donations to those city’s local food banks. And why is that a bad thing?

As a society, we need to do better. We need to stop disrespecting. Stop judging. Stop hating. Children are watching our every move. Don’t let your negative unfounded biases cloud their ability to see the positive attributes in others. Even if it means looking the other way instead of joining those around you who are booing.
